A Lesson in the Cupboard

When I opened the cupboard this morning to get a plate, I was surprised to find the entire stack of dishes oddly off kilter. How they got that way–had I been in a hurry putting them away when I emptied the dishwasher? Did I have a playful ghost in the kitchen?–became immediately less important than what occurred to me…Though off center, each plate was unchanged in its strength and purpose, and underneath them all, at the very bottom, was a larger plate bearing the word “CELEBRATE”.

In that moment I was reminded that our purpose here is not to strive for perfection, but to be our best selves, whatever form that takes. And no matter how the changes in our lives may throw us off balance, what will sustain us, is that there will always be something to celebrate.
